Our Story

Stud Principals of Bauer and Retallack are Jamie and Tracey Buerckner. It is very much a family run enterprise with their children Emily, Hayley and Lachlan involved in all aspects of the farm.

Jamie is the 4th generation to be raised on farming in Ariah Park. His family always ran a traditional mixed farming business including cereal crops and livestock. The merino and 1st cross ewe operation is where Jamie’s interest in Border Leicesters commenced.

Bauer was established in 2004 and in December 2021 Jamie and Tracey seized the opportunity to purchase the well renowned Retallack Stud and property. This new challenge allows them to utilize the fantastic infrastructure on farm at Retallack in particular, the selling complex whilst increasing their flock numbers.

Currently between the two Studs we are running around 850 breeding ewes.

Bauer History

Bauer was established in 2004. From small beginnings of only 12 ewes from Retallack, Bauer has now grown to 500 breeding ewes.

From the Retallack base, bloodlines were initially introduced from Cadell, Morton and Jackson Studs and more recently, Sires have been purchased from Geraldine, Normanhurst, Bindaree, Ellingerrin, Coolawang and Talkook Studs.

Our aim has always been and will continue to be on producing a consistent line of rams each year with a focus on length of body, muscling, wool and fertility.

We are particularly pleased when our clients top 1st cross ewe sales with progeny sired by our Rams and other Border Leicester studs having success using our genetics.

Retallack History

The Retallack stud (flock no. 3666) was established by Graham Grinter in 1975 with ewes from the Blecquin stud, 30 stud ewes bought from the dispersal of the Sproules Lagoon stud (based on The Oaks and Kelso bloodlines) and the sire Campaspe BN305-74. In 1977, Retallack selected 100 maiden ewes from top Victorian studs, Terrappee, Campaspe, The Oaks and Fraser along with a Terrappee sire.

Since its inception, Retallack has had considerable success in the show and sale rings, with Graham's involvement spanning more than 50 years in the industry. Retallack is today considered one of Australia's leading Border Leicester studs, with sheep and genetics being sold to most states of Australia and overseas to America, UK and Nepal.

Retallack genetics are more than proving themselves within the stud industry with a number of other Border Leicester breeders winning broad ribbons at national shows using the Retallack genetics.
